Is Laminate Flooring Waterproof? UK Facts
No, laminate flooring is not waterproof. The wood-fibre core swells when wet. Water-resistant laminate delays swelling but doesn't prevent it.
Standard laminate is NOT waterproof. Water reaches the HDF core through joins or surface damage, causing swelling within 2–4 hours. Water-resistant laminate has sealed edges that delay swelling for 24–72 hours. For genuinely waterproof flooring, choose LVT (vinyl) instead.
What happens when laminate gets wet
Water penetrates through the joins between planks or through surface scratches. It reaches the HDF (high-density fibreboard) core. The wood fibres absorb water and expand vertically. The plank becomes thicker, creating ridges at the seams. This can't be reversed (the core stays swollen even after drying).
How long before damage starts?
- Standard laminate: 2–4 hours of water contact before visible swelling
- Water-resistant laminate: 24–72 hours before swelling (wax-sealed edges slow water entry)
Small spills wiped within 10 minutes won't cause damage. Water left overnight will damage even water-resistant laminate.
Can you fix swollen laminate?
No. Once the core swells, it stays swollen. You must replace the damaged plank. With click-together laminate, this means unclicking planks back to the damaged piece and clicking in a replacement.
Waterproof alternative
For bathrooms or areas with regular water exposure, use LVT (luxury vinyl tile). LVT is 100% waterproof because the core is plastic not wood. Costs £20–40 per m², similar to premium laminate.
