LVT FLOORING

LVT Click Flooring: Installation Guide & UK Costs

Click LVT uses tongue-and-groove edges to lock planks together without glue, floating over the subfloor like laminate.

Quick answer

LVT click flooring has interlocking edges that click together without adhesive. Floats on underlay over existing subfloor. Faster to install than glue-down LVT (DIY-able in 1-2 days), easier to remove or replace damaged planks. Costs £20–40 per m² in UK. Requires level subfloor (3mm tolerance over 3m).

How LVT click systems work

Click LVT has a tongue on one edge and a groove on the opposite edge of each plank. The tongue slots into the groove and locks with an angled push or tap. No glue or nails needed.

The floor floats on top of thin underlay (foam or cork, 1–2mm thick). It's not fixed to the subfloor, held in place only by its own weight and the friction from the interlocking joints.

Most UK click LVT uses either:

Both systems create tight joints that resist separation. Quality click LVT can handle minor subfloor movement without gaps opening.

Click LVT wins for DIY installation and flexibility. Glue-down LVT wins for stability and commercial use.

Installation steps

  1. Check subfloor flatness: Use a 3m straight edge. High spots must be sanded, low spots filled with self-levelling compound. Click LVT won't lock properly over bumps.
  2. Lay underlay: Roll out foam or cork underlay, butt edges together (don't overlap). Tape seams.
  3. Acclimatise planks: Leave unopened packs in the room for 24 hours so they adjust to room temperature.
  4. Start first row: Lay planks along longest wall, leaving 5mm expansion gap. Cut last plank to fit.
  5. Stagger joints: Start second row with offcut from first row (minimum 300mm joint offset). Continue pattern.
  6. Click rows together: Angle and drop (Uniclic) or slide and tap (push-fit). Work across the room.
  7. Cut around obstacles: Use jigsaw for pipes, doorframes. Leave 3mm gap around fixed objects.
  8. Fit trim: Cover expansion gap with scotia beading or matching trim (don't nail through the LVT, fix to wall only).

Tools needed: tape measure, pencil, jigsaw or handsaw, tapping block, rubber mallet, spacers (for expansion gap).

Subfloor requirements

Click LVT works over:

Subfloor must be level to 3mm over 3m. Use a long spirit level or laser to check. High spots cause planks to rock (joints separate). Low spots cause planks to bridge (hollow sound underfoot).

Underfloor heating compatibility

Most click LVT works over underfloor heating if:

Check manufacturer specs. Rigid-core click LVT (SPC) is better over UFH than flexible vinyl because it transfers heat more efficiently.

Cost breakdown UK

Labour (if hiring fitter): £10–18 per m².

A 20m² living room costs £400–700 for materials (mid-range) plus £200–360 if professionally fitted. Most people DIY click LVT to save the labour cost.

Lifespan: 15–25 years depending on wear layer thickness (0.5mm minimum recommended).
