VINYL FLOORING

Vinyl Click Flooring: UK Guide

Vinyl click flooring uses interlocking planks or tiles that click together without glue, offering easier installation than traditional sheet vinyl.

Quick answer

Vinyl click flooring is another name for click-together LVT. Planks have tongue-and-groove edges, install without adhesive, float on underlay. 100% waterproof, costs £18–40 per m² in UK. Easier to install and remove than glue-down vinyl sheet or tiles.

What is vinyl click flooring?

Vinyl click flooring is a marketing term for click-together luxury vinyl tile (LVT). The "vinyl" refers to the material (PVC-based), "click" refers to the installation method (tongue-and-groove locking edges).

It's sold as individual planks (typically 1220mm × 180mm to mimic wood) or tiles (300mm × 300mm to mimic stone/ceramic). Each piece has a multi-layer construction: wear layer, design layer, vinyl core, and backing.

Vinyl click costs more but looks better and is easier to repair. Sheet vinyl is cheaper and faster for large rooms with few obstacles.

Installation

Same method as laminate flooring:

  1. Level subfloor (sand high spots, fill dips)
  2. Lay thin underlay (1–2mm foam or cork)
  3. Click first row of planks together along wall, leave 5mm expansion gap
  4. Stagger joints by 300mm+ in subsequent rows
  5. Cut last plank in each row to fit
  6. Cover expansion gap with trim/beading

DIY-able in 1–2 days for typical room. Tools: jigsaw, tape measure, tapping block, spacers.

Waterproof performance

Vinyl click is 100% waterproof (the vinyl planks don't absorb water). Suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms.

The joins between planks are not sealed. Water can seep between planks if it sits on the floor for days. For wet rooms or areas with standing water, either glue the planks down or use welded-seam sheet vinyl instead.

Cost UK

DIY installation saves £10–18 per m² in labour. A 15m² kitchen costs £330–480 for materials (mid-range).

Lifespan

Quality vinyl click with 0.5mm+ wear layer lasts 15–25 years. Cheaper products (0.3mm wear layer) show wear in traffic areas within 8–12 years.
